Experience International Cultures at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival This Summer

Cooking classes. Art workshops. Expert lectures. These are a few of the ways that the Smithsonian Folklife Festival highlights different cultures from across the globe every summer. This year, the annual festival is slated to return from June 22nd to the 26th and again from June 30th to July 4th.

Over the course of those long weekends, the National Mall will come alive with different events and displays dedicated to the world’s international peoples and their specific ideals, practices, and traditions. In the past, that has included a digital series depicting the rise of a women’s empowerment movement in Bolivia. It’s also included a master cochineal-dyeing workshop and a Korean ginseng chicken soup cooking class. Although the exact events change from one year to the next, they’re always designed to capture the spirit of people you may never otherwise have the chance to encounter. If you prefer to participate virtually, look for the many digital exhibits or shop the online marketplace, populated with products from international artisans. If you can’t participate even in this way, you’re always welcome to donate to the festival and further its mission.
